Illustrated Barb Cycles advertisements appeared prolifically in the mid to late 1940's. Enormous social changes were occuring at this time, with the end of World War II and the beginnining of the great post-war boom. Bicycles were an affordable mode of transport, with the car industry still evolving.
Advertisements list the Barb models available (Roadsters, Ladies, Sports, Juveniles), and also emphasise the additional features and accessories for the rider. An advertisement for a Sunbeam bicycle is included here, as Finlay Brothers were an agency for this English brand at one stage.
The suggestion that Barb Cycles had been "Famous since 1869" appears in several advertisements. This is a reference to James Finlay's winning of Australia's first bicycle race in 1869, on a velocipede that he had built called "The Barb".
